December 16, 2004. The Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, Florida. It was the pre-season testing period for my rookie season as a pro race-car driver. I was three runs into a seven-run practice session on the quarter-mile course. Seven runs of a quarter mile each might not sound like a lot, but in drag racing it’s huge. Each run is so punishing to my pro-stock car that it takes up to an hour and a half for my nine-man crew to prep it for the next run. The actual run is less than seven seconds. Ninety percent of the race is preparation.
