Baisc Construction of Electrical Machines
Rotating electrical machines accomplish electromechanical energy conversion. Generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy , while motors convert an electrical energy input into a mechanical energy output. Generators and morots have basic construction characteristics which are common among many types of machines. The functions of various machines differ even though their construction is similar. Generators have rotary motion supplies by prime movers which provide mechanical energy input. Relative motion between the conductors and a magnetic field of generators produces an electrical energy output. Motors have electrical energy supplied to their windings and a magnetic field that develops an electromagnetic interaction to produce mechanical energy or torque .
The construction of most rotating electrical machines is somewhat similar.Most machines have a stationary part called the stator and a rotating set of conductors called the rotor.The stator consists of yoke or frame which serves as a support and a metallic path for magnetic flux developed in a machine .
