Rotating machines have field poles which are of the stator assembly. Field poles are constructed of laminated sheets and secured to the machine frame.They are usually cured on the portion near the rotor to provide a low-reluctance patch for magnetic flux. The field windings or field coils are placed around the poles. The field coils are eletromagnets that develop an electromagnetic field interaction with the rotor to generate a voltage or to produce torque in a machine .
In the study of electrical machines , there is a need to understand the electromagnetic fields produced by the rotating section of a motor or a ganerator. This section is called armature or rotor. Some types of machines use solid rotors called squirrel-cage rotors .
