Westlife是来自爱尔兰的合唱团，由Shane Kian Nicky Bryan Mark五位优秀的年轻人组成。早在1998年，Boyzone的经济人Louis Walsh发现Shane、Mark、与Kian共组的6人体，他决定继BZ后再组一个团，在都柏林办微试，找到Nick和Bryan，重新整合成5人组合。Walsh找Ronan来为他们上"艺人养成课"，原本取名Westside并且已经累积相当人气，但是因为美国有一个同名团，为了避免纠纷，也为了将来进军美国，在1999年正式改名为Westlife。当时的Westlife在1998年底为11月加入偶像杂志的巡回演唱会(Smash Hits Road Show)，也和师傅Boyzone五年前一样，获得该杂志「Best New Act Award最佳演出新人奖」。

Shane、Mark、Kian与I.O.U

Shane与Mark和一群志同道合的好友同组I.O.U，翻唱BSB的歌，反应不错，Mark在一个音乐表演中认识Kian。当时Kian自己有一个团体叫3 Rock Bands，Kian与Shane是邻居，当时的团体还有其它3位团员。他们经由爱尔兰一个专门安排乐团在当地俱乐部来到公司，在家乡Sligo的小酒馆表演，Shane与Mark自资录了一首歌"Together Girl Forever"的Demo带寄给Walsh，Walsh在一周内就为他们安排为BSB的都柏林演唱会暖场。Ronan也到场看他们表演，发现他们很有潜力。

Nick与Bryan加入

后来改名为Westside的I.O.U，一些团员因故离团，Walsh找到担任Bass（单曲"More Than Words"可以清楚听到）的Bryan及曾经是职业足球队员的Nick，巧得是两位新团员原本就是朋友，这五位青年就此踏入人生最辉煌的事业。Ronan从Westside刚诞生的时候就开始教导他们，他自谦只是和他们说话。AKian说，Ronan告诉他们关于这一行的事情及注意事项与禁忌，如何与团员相处，必经的高低潮，在音色上给予建议，他的角色像朋友。Ronan是主动要求与他们见面的，因为他希望能够帮助他们就像Walsh当年FBZ一样。

有九家唱片公司拒他们于门外

1998年夏天，当时仍名Westside的他们翻唱Boyz II Men 、Boyzone与Take That歌曲来给他们的唱片公司听，但都只听到："你们很棒"，然后就没回音了，前来看表演的第十家唱片公司看到他们后当下决定要签下他们，就是英国RCA/BMG唱片资深A&R顾问Simon Cowell，他们甚至还没开始唱呢！对这5个大男孩很有想法的Cowell从来没有还听到新人试音就下了签唱片约的决定，他看到这5个男孩一站出来当即就知道，他们就是他想找的新偶像男孩团体。

BZ的接班团体

从开始为BZ暖场，WL就被视为BZ的接班团体。1999年4月WL推出第一首单曲时正当BZ准备推出[By Request]精选专辑，BZ将解散的传言及圈内人的预测，使得由BZ的Ronan与经纪人Louis Walsh共同经纪的WL顺势成为BZ的指定接班，而Ronan的强力背书，加上曾经拥有天王偶像团Take That、被称为"男孩偶像养成班"的唱片公司强力抬轿，同公司的还有坏男孩5ive及Christina Aquilera，WL的音乐事业，相对于傅团BZ，不但起飞平顺，而且一飞冲一天。
