I ran clear across Alabama. No particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clearly ( to the ) ocean, and when I got there, I figured since I gone this far, my look turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured since I gone this far, ( I ) might as well 20 just turn back, keep right on going. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate and when I had to go, you know, I went.
At the bus stop - Resent
Old woman: And so, you just run.
Gump: Yeah.
Highway
( Forrest is running along the highway. He runs down a road 21 between field of wheat. In a Mountain river, Forrest runs across a cobblestone bridge. The Rocky Mountains are behind him in distance. He runs through some meadowland. )
Gump: I'd think a lot, about mama, Bubba, Lieutenant Dan. But most of all, I thought about Jenny. I thought about her a lot.
Barber Shop
( The three men in the barber shop watch the news on television. )
Newsman: For more than two years now, a man named Forrest Gump, a gardener from Greenbow, Alabama, stopping only to sleep has been running across America.
Coffee Shop
( Jenny fills customer's coffee cups. )
Newscaster: Charles Cooper brings us his report 22 .
Newsman: For the fourth time on his journey across America. Forrest Gump, a gardenter from Greenbow, Alabama is about to 23 cross the Mississippi River again today.
( The TV shows Forrest runs across a bridge that reads “ Mississippi River ” . )
Jenny: I'll be damned 24 ! Forrest.
( When Gump is running, he is followed by lots of newsmen. )
Newsman 25 : Sir, why are you running?
Newsman: Why are you running? Are you doing this for world peace?
Newsman: Are you doing this for the homeless?
Newsman: Are you running for woman's rights?
Newsman: Or for the environment?
Newsman: Or for animals?
Gump: ( off screen voice ) They just couldn't believe it somebody would do all that run for no particular reason.
Newsman: Why are you doing this?
Gump: I just felt like running 26 .
Gump: ( off screen voice ) I just felt like running.
Jogger: It's you! I can't believe it's really you.
Gump: Now for some reason what I was doing seemed to make sense 27 to people.
Jogger: I mean, it's like an alarm went off my head, you know. I said, here's a guy who's got his act together. Here's someone who's got it all figured out. Here's someone who has answer. I'll follow you anywhere, Mr. Gump 28 .
Gump: ( off screen voice ) So, I got company 29 . And after that, I got more company, and then, even more people joined in. Somebody later told me it gave people hope. Now … Now, I don't know anything about that but some of those people asked me if I can help them out 30 .
Aging Hippie: Hey, man. Hey, listen. I was wondering if you might help, huh? Listen, I'm in the bumper sticker business and I've been trying to think up a good slogan. And since you have been such a big inspiration to the people around you. I thought you might be able to help me jump into … Whoa! Man, you just to a big pile of dogshit! 31
Gump: It happens.
Aging Hippie: What? Shit?
Gump: Sometimes.
Gump: ( off screen voice ) And some years later, I heard that fella did come up with 32 a bumper sticker slogan and he made a lot of money off of it. Another time I was running along , somebody who lost all his money in the T-shirt business. He wanted put my face on a T-shirt, but he couldn't draw that well and he didn't have a camera 33 .
Man: ( hands Gump a T-shirt to wipe his sweat. ) Here use this one. Nobody likes that color anyway.
Gump: ( gives the T-shirt back to the man ) Have a nice day.
( The man spreads the T-shirt, Gump's image is on it. )
Gump: ( off screen voice ) For some years later, I found out that man did come up with an idea for T-shirt, he made a lot money off of it. Anyway, like I was saying, I had a lot company. My mama always said, you got to put the past behind you before you can move on. And I think that's what my run was all about. I had run for three years, two months, fourteen days and sixteen hours.
( Gump is running, followed by a lot of runners. Suddenly Gump stops. )
Jogger: Quiet! Quiet! He's gonna to say some.
Gump: I'm pretty tired. Think I'll go home now.
Jogger: Now what we supposed to 34 do?
