对《红河谷》，其籍贯尚有争议，美国人相信这首歌来自1860年代的美国得克萨斯州，加拿大人则坚定地认为这首歌有北方色彩，明显属于加拿大。对此，我国似乎更倾向于相信这是加拿大民歌，因为毕竟美国还有顶“帝国主义国家”的帽子，加拿大则因为是白求恩同志的故乡而更受中国人的喜爱。

这首red river valley，范继淹译配，范继淹这个人似乎是吕叔湘的学生。英文原文和中文意思差不多是一样的，但是我觉得英文版远没有中文版好听。词好！唱的也好！ 中文歌词更加朴素雅致，堪称英文诗翻译的经典，至今读来仍然令人心动。

上世纪70年代末80年代初，唱“外国民歌”（实际上就是country music，但当时好像没有乡村音乐这个称呼，而是一律将来自境外的歌曲统称为“外国民歌”。)几乎就是叛逆新青年的象征，尤其是这首《红河谷》，当时无与争锋者。对这股强劲的西化潮流，当局破天荒地采取了纵容乃至鼓励的态度，对此，西方世界一片赞叹之声，以为“破冰”“解冻”的象征。在极权国家，无力的人们解构极权的方式不约而同地都采用了“性”“爱情”的工具，不过解构到最后，人们是否清楚哪里是工具、哪里是本能？也许就像《1984》里面温斯顿对情人裘莉亚说的：你只不过是下半身的叛逆！

下半身的叛逆也是叛逆吗？在70年代到80年代，性也被赋予了神圣悲壮的色彩，今天的小朋友看来，多么不可思议！
