因此子网划分技术是很重要的,它有效的缓解了网络资源的消耗,使得网络资源得到合理的分配。简单一点说:在没有划分子网技术时,Internet传统的资源分配方式是将一个IP地址分成网络号(net-id)和主机号(host-id),并在网络号部分加入1~5位类别比特位,通过类别比特位将IP地址分为A、B、C、D、E五类,而这五类最大的区别又在于数量不同,和所容纳的主机不同。
但是这种传统的分配方式,有着很多弊端。其中就包括上述的网络资源消耗过快等很棘手的问题。
在这种情况下,通过划分子网技术就可以解决上述问题。其思想是:就是在你得到的整块IP空间中,通过子网掩码再次划分出子网,这样,同样能满足各个部门的通信需求。同时,子网与网络地址相结合,不仅可以把位于不同物理位置的主机组合在一起,还可以通过分离关键设备或者优化数据传送等措施提高网络安全性能,降低网络流量。这样,就可以合理且节约的使用了网络资源。可以说,划分子网技术是人类信息技术中,里程碑式的壮举。

网络技术发展到今天,IP地址的编址方法已经经历了三个重要的历史阶段。这三个阶段是:
(1) 分类的IP地址。这是最基本的编址方法,在1981年就通过了相应的标准。这也是最传统的IP编址方法。
