One Saturday four years ago I was in my Dodge Ram, passing by a town named Arcade. I had to slam on the brakes when a speeding car ahead of me smacked right into a doe and kept on going. The deer was dead on impact. But a scrawny fawn stood there on shaky legs, looking right at me. I felt a tug in my chest, kind of like when a fish grabs your line after a long day of no bites. I hadn't felt something like that for a long time, and I wanted no part of it now. Still, that fawn looked right at me. I didn't kill your mother, I thought, hit the gas and took off. But I glanced in my rearview mirror, and my mind snapped a picture of the little guy standing there all alone.
