Materials
Acrylic acid(AA),supplied by Beijing Chemical Regent Co.China,was purified by vacuum distillation and neutralized by an aqueous solution of NaOH.The neutralization degree of AA is defined as: ND= (Nb/Na)×1 00%,where Nb and Na are the moles of Na0H and of AA,respectively.Triple distilled water has specific
conductance<0.5s-1cm-1. Commercially available kerosene was treated with activated carbon and filtered for several times before use.Emulsifier,a blend of Span 80 and Op10,obtained from Beijing Chemicals Co.,and photoinitiator,2,2一dimethoxy一2一phenylacetophenone(DMPA)obtained from Changzhou Huatai Chemicals,Co.,were used as received.
Preparation ofInverse Emulsion
Aqueous solution of monomer was dispersed in kerosene with proper amounts of emulsifier Span 80 and Op l 0,stirring to form water—in—oil emulsion.Before dispersing,the water phase and oil phase were bubbled with purified nitrogen for about 20 min,respectively.
Photopolymerization Procedure
Figure 1 displays the schematic diagram of photopolymerization device.Upon purging with nitrogen,the photopolymerization was conducted in a cylindrical quartz reaction vessel(5cm(Φ)×9cm(h))under irradiation.A certain amount of photoinitiator dissolved in kerosene was injected into the reaction vessel through the sample inlet before iradiation.The temperature for the inverse emulsion polymerization was automatically controlled at a designated value within a fluctuation of±l℃ by circulating cool water through a jacketed—vesse1.

CoNCLUSIoNS
Photoinitiated inverse emulsion polymerization of sodium acrylate can be completed in a quite rapid
polymerization rate and reaches a high conversion in a short time compared with thermal initiated
polymerization.The resulted polymer has a molecular weight as high as l 0 . Nucleation Occurs mainly inside
monomer droplets,which acts as a mi croreactor of solution polymerization.The polymerization is influenced by
photoinitiator concentration,incident light intensity, initial monomer concentration.emulsifier content and
reaction temperature.etc.The effect of initiator absorption is the main cause of decreasing the polymerization
rate at high initiator concentration.At the low pH value of water phase.the polymerization rate reduces evidently
but changes slightly at alkaline medium.The electrostatic interaction between macroradica1 and monomer can be
a reasonable explanation for this evident reduction.
