Upon the request of several Chinese families living within the ward, The Garland Third Ward of Richardson Texas Stake organized Chinese Group in early 1994. James Wong was the group leader working under the direction of the ward's Chinese Committee of which he was a member. Lyale Marr (Chairman?), Agnes Parentis and Susan Beryl (?-Agnes should know) were also members of the committee. The objectives of the group were

*to provide a better learning environment for those members who had difficulty progressing in the gospel with the English language

*to preach the gospel to the many newly arrived and the older Chinese immigrants in their own language

*to unit and strengthen the testimony of the Chinese members in the metropolis through service

The group started with two Chinese-speaking missionaries and soon had four. It had its own sacrament meeting and Sunday School and about one activity each month. It also provided weekly English as Second Language (ESL) classes as a service to the local Chinese community. It invited all the Chinese members in the metropolis to participate in and support the group as often as they can.

In April, 1996, the Chinese Group officially grew into the Garland Third Chinese Branch, with Richard Lee as Branch President, James Wong as First Counselor and Shin-puu Jeng as Second Counselor. It was a dependent branch - it worked very closely with the Garland Third Ward which provided the administrative support (such as the financial and membership work), the Primary and the Young Men and Young Women organizations for the young people. It is ideal in that the young people have the opportunity to mingle with their English-speaking peers and hence will be prepared to integrate with the regular church membership in the near future. Also, the clerical support by the ward provided opportunity for the priesthood holders to fill the other much-needed positions of the branch.

The Chinese Branch has grown from a few families to more than 65 in membership with enough active members to fill all its available positions. Generally, it is achieving its original chartered objectives. It has expedited the gospel progress of many members and is gaining momentum in energizing all the active members. Although it is slow in reactivating the less active and baptizing new converts, it is actively striving to reach out to the less active and to preach the gospel to the Chinese community.

On the one hand, the Chinese Branch owes its "success" to the tremendous unconditional support and assistance from the leadership of the stake and the Garland Third Ward. On the other hand, it has definitely been the fruit of hard work and dedication of the obedient missionaries and the enthusiastic branch members.
