Basically, stimuli that the learner acquires are placed in an area of memory called short-term memory. Short-term memory is limited to information of only approximately seven information items and is held in the brain for temporary, encoded, and stored there. When the learner places new items in STM, they displace the ones that were there, which are then forgotten.
