Model reference state feedback can be considered to be the major trend in control logic at present. However, one issue which emerges when this logic is applied to vehicle control is the fact that changes in road surface m make the reference values calculated by the model unrealistic. In addition, the use of a state feedback signal in driving situations fixes the vehicle’s behavior in one form, and expert drivers tend to experience the control as incongruous. In the future it will be desirable to develop dedicated automotive control logics which consider the characteristics of the vehicle as a machine, rather than merely applying conventional control logics to vehicles. An ideal system has been proposed in which a tire model is used to determine control targets and yaw moment is employed as a feedback signal (Katsuyama & Fukushima, 2000). This is a hint towards the elimination of the weak points of control systems which feed back the state quantity taken in the actual situation (Fig. 17).
