I was quite stunned to read that you have designated a "Day to Promote the Sanctity of Life," that you are committing your administration "to build a culture that respects life."

Sounds lovely, but does not exactly jibe with your actions.

Ah, but reading further I learned that this sanctity, this respect for life relates only to unborn fetuses, only to the prevention of abortion.

Your assertion that "every child is a priority and a blessing ..." evidently does not extend to the children of Afghanistan, to the children of Iraq. More innocent Afghan people were killed in this avenging 'war on terror' in pursuit of one man and his followers than were killed in the terrible tragedy of September 11. The Afghan people were promised aid to help them rebuild, just as they were promised after the U.S.-aided war fifteen years earlier. They are still waiting.

Your father's 1991 'Desert Storm' destroyed the middle class infrastructure in Iraq and imposed sanctions thereafter denying medical aid and other necessities, resulting, according to UNICEF, in the deaths of 4,500 Iraqi children under the age of 5 EACH MONTH. Nor did that war ever end; the U. S. has continued to bomb Iraq in the name of 'enforcing the no-fly zone.' Does your belief that "every child is a priority and a blessing ..." extend to the home front? How is the 'sanctity of life' being promoted for the homeless in the streets of America, most of whom are children? For the millions who have no access to health care? For parents who can't find jobs?

Evidently not, for you've just announced you want stricter work requirements for welfare mothers, including reducing work credits for education, while providing $1 billion less for childcare subsidies. Does a "culture that respects life" expect mothers to be good workers when they're worried sick about their children? Is a latchkey child "a priority and a blessing?" A foster child?

Your new welfare plan also does not consider the reduction of poverty a goal. This promotes "sanctity of life?"

Your administration obviously cannot afford to spend money on the welfare of American children. It needs its billions to bomb the children of Iraq.

Mr. President, you are a poster boy for hypocrisy.

Visionary William McDonough uses as his basic design question for any program, "How do we love all the children of all species for all time?"

Think about it.

Tell me how your proposed "Day to Promote the Sanctity of Life" will better the lives of children on this planet.
