冰淇淋的来历可谓源远流长。据记载，早在公元前，古罗马人便习惯将柠檬汁兑霜饮用。后来阿拉伯人占领意大利最南端的西西里岛时，将配方带到现在的非洲及中东，成为当时的饮料时尚。
几个时世纪以后，威尼斯人在与世界各国的广泛通商中，开始将柠檬冰霜成份做细微的调整，并试着加入各种果汁。时光的飞逝，冰霜这个名字却一直沿用至今。
以柠檬为原料的冰箱在制作工艺用程序上承受了多种改良，不再将柠檬汁直接兑入冰霜，而是采用水、盐、制冷设备，将水果冷冻汁混合，从而形成各种口味的水果冰淇淋。
慢慢地，除水果口味以外，喜好创新的意大利厨师着手将鸡蛋、牛奶及糖等各种加入原料，由此发明了奶油类冰淇淋，这便是最早的冰淇淋起源。

One thing we do know is that ice-cream making used to be a big secret in Europe. King Charles I of England, for instance, paid a lot of money to stop his cook from giving the recipe for his delicious frozen cream to anyone else.

Nowadays, of course, there is no secret to making the world's most popular dessert anymore. Recipes are easy to find for everything from simple vanilla sodas to the 12-foot-tall, world's biggest ice-cream sundae made in California in 1985.
