Start with Ourselves

Socialist concept of honour and disgrace—Eight Dos and Don’ts—is well accepted by most Chinese people. However, many undergraduates just take it for granted. Some may think things related to politics are too far away from their life while others just claim that they’ve already paid enough attention to it. But is this really true?
When you get into a self-study room, you may be glad that there are still a lot of seats available. However, almost all these seats are taken by bags, books or something else, whose owners will not come until several hours later. Apparently, it is a waste of resources. Even if you’re lucky to get a seat, you’ll find yourself surrounded by people eating, talking or playing with their mobile phones. All these noises will distract your attention. In fact, these students gain benefits at the expense of others, which is one of the Eight Don’ts. If you are there, what will you think of these people idling their time and disturbing others? I guess you wish they would improve their moral quality.
There is a joke prevailing in BISU: “During the 4 years’ study, if you didn’t lose a thermos bottle on the front yard of cafeterias, it would be a miracle.” As a matter of fact, a student may lose his or her thermos bottles one after another. If it happens to you, perhaps you’ll just complain and buy a new one. But to make matters worse, some victims might shift the loss to others by taking away theirs deliberately. Little by little, it becomes a vicious circle. I guess you wish those people would improve their moral quality too.
Do you still believe that the socialist concept of honour and disgrace is far away from us? I think the answer is NO. From trivial things happening in our daily life, we ourselves begin to doubt the morality of college students, let alone the public, who tends to form a concept that college students lack morality owing to the immoral behavior of the minority of us. What a shame!
As the future of our motherland, we should make great contribution to our country. There’s no doubt that we play a very important role in the development of society. What if we’re lacking in morality? That will be a terrible thing… Absolutely, it’s necessary for us to follow “Eight Dos and Don’ts”.
We can do from minor things to improve our quality. Can we promise never to be late? Of course we can! Can we promise never to play truant? Of course we can! Can we promise never to plagiarize? Of course we can! Why don’t we set good examples to the public? Why don’t we follow the Eight dos and don’t to impress the society that we’re not the generation with lower standards of morality? Let’s start with ourselves, act now and make every effort to establish a good image of college students!
