Forgive me, mother, for not writing sooner.
I died last week in Baghdad.
A precision bomb dropped from a B52
vaporized my left leg from the hip down
while shrapnel dug into my vertebrae
after having torn up my lower intestines.
I might have lived, were it not for
the molten debris that poured into my eyes
and fried my brain. It was dreadful.

You remember Baghdad, don't you, mother?
They called it Babylon once, I remember,
back when people still had to ride horses,
and talked to strangers without being thought odd.
I sit by the Tigris sometimes, thinking of you.
It reminds me of that other river in Africa
where they dumped my body, just after they
shot me in the head. I think it was because
I gave back the prayerbook. I didn't need it!

At least its not as bad as that time in Laos,
the napalm melted the flesh right off my bones.
Or when that murky yellow cloud in Syria made me
cough out lungs until I bled out the eyes.
Remember when they chopped me up in Nicaragua
because I preferred the color of fire? That was
after I died, slowly, of smallpox in Appalachia.
Its like when they killed me over for saying... I forget.
That was last year. Or maybe it was yesterday.

I'm very sorry for not sending you pictures.
If you want, look for me on CNN. See that kid?
The one with no arms? He has my eyes, I think.
Or look out the window in the evening.
See the forgotten girl beside the pious churchgoers?
She makes sampaguita wreaths with my hands.
You could always cut up the National Geographic
featuring the child of the congo‚ with a bloated
belly and a big smile. That's my grin!

I know you're going to ask when I'm coming home.
I've been meaning to, but I keep getting delayed.
Don't you worry, though. I'm on my way already.
Perhaps one day I'll walk right out the ocean,
hand in hand with Bernardo Caprio. Or perhaps
I'll just drop out of the sky, to the tune of harps.
But most likely it will be one dark night,
When I rise en masse from the inner city,
And all the world will tremble.

Until then, mother. I love you.
