“X-mas”是“Christmas”的缩写。源自于希腊文“ΧΡΙ∑ΤΟ∑”，译为“Christos”，是希腊语对基督的称法。希腊语是整个新约中所用的语言。

Christmas--正式拼法。
X-mas__非正式拼法。前者用于正式场合。后者用于非正式场合。
Xmas在宗教书写中有数百年的历史了，X是希腊语里面的chi, Χριστος的第一个字母，表示基督(Christ)。像这种用法有类似的Xtian代表Christian克里斯汀。不少不知道X的希腊渊源的人还以为Xmas是为了非正式场合下发音简便（ĕks'məs)。
