Farewell, Love
Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503~1542)
Farwell, Love, and all thy laws forever,
Thy baited hooks shall tangle me no more;
Senec and Plato call me from thy lore,
To perfect wealth my wit for to endeavor,
In blind error then I did persever,
Thy sharp repulse, that prickth aye so sore,
Hath taought me to set in trifles no store
And’ scape forth since liberty is lever
Therefore farewell, go trouble younger hearts,
And in me claim no more authority
With idle youth go use thy property,
And therein spend thy many brittle darts,
For hitherto though I have lost all my time,
Me lusteth no longer rotten boughs to climb.
1.thy: your “Thy” and “thine” are both old uses. Thy are the possessive forms of “thou” and “thee”. The reflexive form of “thy” is “thyself”.
2.thy baited hooks shall tangle me no more:
3.Senec and plato call me from thy lore, To perfect wealth my wit for to endeavor: I.e. “senec” (Seneca, the Roman moral philosopher and tragedian) and plato call me to educate my mind to perfect well-being (wealth)
4.I blind…lever: when I did preserver in blind error, thy sharp repuls, that pricketh aye so sore, hath taugnt me to set no store in trifles and escape forth since liberty is lever: Persever: persevere; pricketh: pricks; aye: always (old use); lever: more pleasing
5.And therein spend thy many brittle darts:
6.Me lusteth no longer rotten boughs to climb: I care no longer to climb rotten boughs. Me lusteth: I care to climb rotten boughs:

Youth
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
