中国地质大学知名校友:这句英文怎么翻译？

这个句子有点麻烦。问题就在next to的翻译上。next to有“紧邻，好象，下一个”的意思。
我觉得这个句子首先应该是一个科技专业英语。所以travel就不应该翻译成旅游，应该是传播的意思。
我在这里试图把next to翻译成依靠的意思，不知道合适不，希望发贴者，或者高手牛人能不吝赐教。

中文翻译：依靠电线中电波的传播速度来检查传播特征是行不通的。

什么样的examination呢
of the travel characteristics
后面的next to the propagation speed of the waves in the electrical wire用于修饰the travel characteristics
examination 有检查、考试、体验等意思
这里取后者
next to 有靠近的意思
在此引申为好象的意思
全句的意思是
一次对旅游的体验、享受
这次旅游又好像在电线里流过的光波般匆忙
是不可能的！

或者是
You want to enjoy your holiday,
but the time is so short that it's impossible!
