介绍West Lake或Peking UniVersity

The West Lake is a like a shining pearl inlaid on the vast land of China, reputed for beautiful scenery, a multitude of historical sites, brilliant cultural relics, and a profusion of native products. Legend has it that the West Lake was a heavenly jewel fallen to earth. Pragmatists insist that it is a mere lagoon on Hangzhou's western fringe. In any case, West Lake has inspired painters for centuries.

In ancient times, this place had been an shallow sea gulf before it evolved into a residual lake. The Baidi and Sudi causeways provide access to many parts of the lake. Most of the best known tourist sites lie around and within the lake. With a circumference of 15 kilometers , the lake area itself is easy for the visitor to negotiate.

Peking University(Beijing University), China’s most renowned key university , originally named the Metropolitan College, was founded in 1898 as a symbol of the prevailing ideological trend of bourgeois democracy. In 1912, after the fall of Qing Dynasty, the Metropolitan College became Peking University.

The history of the university is closely related to the development of modern Chinese politics, thought, culture, and science. Students at Peking University played a vanguard role in the May 4th Movement in 1945, among many others. The university moved to Kunming, Yunnan Province, during the War of Resistance Against Japan, forming Southwest United University with Tsinghua and Nankai universities, both from the north. In 1952 it moved back to the campus of Yanjing University in the northwest corner of Beijing.

Today Peking University has more than 20 departments that offer 60 majors. Of the 2,000-odd faculty members and researchers, 140 ranks as professors and 400 as associate professors. It has 10,000 students, with 600 graduate students and 200 foreigners from 39 different countries. International cultural exchange and cooperation include inviting foreign teachers and scholars as well as exchanging Peking University Journal, books and teaching materials with more than 60 foreign universities.

The 150-hectare campus was once part of the imperial parklands. Shaoyuan, in the southwest corner of the campus, landscaped in the southern Chinese style, was built in late Ming Dynasty. The Weiming Lake area is a favorite spot for quiet study and reflection. American writer Edgar Snow (author of Red STAR over China) is buried on one of the surrounding hillsides.

一:West Lake(可以参考:)
The West Lake became a famed scenic place in China only after it was repeatedly dredged and developed by sagacious people of various dynasties, especially after it was protected, developed and eulogized by Bai Juyi and Su Dongpo.

However, it was not accidental for the West lake to become a scenic lake with superb tourist value. First, this is because of the fact that the lake is prodigally endowed with a picturesque landscape. Skirted on three sides by verdant mountains, and opening on the fourth side to a flatland, the lake has all the makings of a superb landscape. The green mountains on three sides serve to gather all the auspicious potents from heaven, while the flatland offers ample space for ventilation. The entire layout of the lake is both closely knit yet leave much leeway for further landscaping. The mountains are not high yet are full of depth, the water surface is not really vast yet it changes in a most rhythmic way. The place is made all the more graceful by curves that form the contours of the place, and verdant greeness that provides the basic colour tune. The West Lake also has a lot to thank the sagacious people of bygone days for , who made resourceful decisions in developing the lake, piling up the mud dug from the lake to construct dykes and isles and beautify them with pagodas, bridges, pavilions and terraces and trees, flowers and plants. These man-made scenes and sights are set in such harmony with the environment that the West Lake becomes richer in both tourist resources and cultural connotations. The three isles on the lake look more like the Penglai Islands, the fabled abode for immortals. The scenery of the West Lake has such a soothing effect that an angry man is bound to come to his senses if he cares to pay a visit to the lake, whose tranquil environs are imbued with philosophic meanings. That is why no foreign visitor would leave the West Lake without feeling captivated by its poetic charms-a visit to the lake is tantamount to having a class in traditional Chinese culture.
