原题,please briefly explain why the stars make a poor clock.(look up sidereal time)

Poor clock here means that the stars are not good indication of time.

I think it's because the pattern of the stars in the night changes during different time of the year. So stars alone can not tell you exactly what time it is. Plus that you can not see them when it's cloudy.

Although I think in old time people did use stars as clock. Check with science book for more details.

先要知道恒星和行星的区别,恒星是与行星相对而言的,指那些自身都会发光,并且位置相对固定的星体。太阳是恒星,我们夜晚看到的星星大多数都是看上去不动的恒星。所以恒星可以用来衡量时间啊,但行星却不行.
所以这里指行星相对恒星是个poor clock,就是很难衡量时间,很难做参照物.恒星却可以作为较好的参照物啦.
