dark 最普通用词,指缺乏自然光线或人工照明,使某物漆黑无光或光线十分微弱。
dim 指光线不足或视力较差,不能清晰地看见物体。
这两个词都可以表示黑暗。
dark表示真实的黑暗或悲观的看法：the dark house；the dark cast of his mind（阴郁的心情）；
dim表示视觉不明确的一种形式，强调视觉和察觉的困难。
Though heavily sedated, she had a dim awareness of what was happening .(虽然服用了大量的镇静剂，她对所发生的事仍有一种模糊的意识)
字典里说：
Dark 暗;黑暗的
Dim 微暗的;暗淡的
抛开字典来说，dark是黑暗，没有光。dim是有光的，但往往是昏暗的灯光或烛光。这两个词在实际应用中几乎不能替换。
具体用法举例：
In the dark, I could see his figure but not his face.
黑暗中，我只能看见他的身影，看不清脸。
（绝对不能改为 in the dim）
There are dark clouds in the sky.
天空乌云密布。
（绝对不能说 There are dim clouds in the sky）
The light is too dim for me to read.
光线太暗,我无法看书。
（绝对不能说The light is too dark for me to read）
dim 昏暗(not totally dark)=little light
dark 黑暗=no light
