except 与except for的区别在于：

从形式上看，except后面不仅可以接短语，还可以接that引导的从句，而except for后面只能接名词短语。

从内容上看，except表示“同类中除此以外”而except for则是“不同类中的除此以外”如：

We all went to the park except Mary.

除Mary外我们都去公园了。

其中，we与Mary是同类比较

Your composition is good except for the handwriting.

除字迹以外，你的作文很不错。

其中，composition 与handwriting是不同类比较

It will do except that it is too long.

这行，只是太长了一些。

except 与but 的意思相同，用法也相同，但but 后不能接从句。如：

We all went to the park except (but) Mary.

besides 表示“除…外，其他的也”如：

We all went to the park besides Mary.

除Mary外，我们也都去了公园。

而but for表示“要不是”，如：

But for you, I can”t finish the work.

要不是你的帮助，我完不成工作。

except for除了(不同类型,不能接介词)

aside from把..放在一边.
but for要不是..

other than除了(一般和否定的'除了'有关)
