how often是对频度的提问,必须用对应的回答
比如:thrice a week,twice a month ......

大致赞同上面几位的看法.
How often 是对做某件事的频率进行提问，How many times 是专问次数的,如：
1.How many times has he been there?
他到那里几次了？
但更多时候是表示一种感叹，如：
2. No matter how many times I go over the figures,they just do not come out right.
不管我计算多少次，数目都不对。
3. We've tried this method for no one knows how many times.
这个方法我们已不知试了多少次了。

how often 提问表示频率，回答用once，twice，three times 等等。
例如：
How often do you go there? once in a week.
你多久去那里一次？
How often you have been abroad? No often, only twice.
你出国几次了？不多，只出去过两次。

而how many times 是问次数，用one time， two times

我觉得这道题本来就只能用how many times.
how often对频率提问“多久一次” how many times对次数提问“多少次”
通过下面的例子体会一下.
e.g.--How often do you take the pills?
--Twice a day.
--How many times do you take the pills a day?
--Twice.
e.g.--How many times do you exercis a month?
--Five or six times.
--How often do you exercise?
--Five or six times a month/ a week/a year.

不能，How often 是专门用来提问时间间隔的，是一个固定搭配，而how many times什么也不是~ 都算不上是一个短语~
