There are three major flows involved in global logistics: material flow, document flow and cash flow.
l Very similar to domestic condition. The global supply chain may require the involvement of other parties besides the seller and the buyer. Some of the common issues to be resolved between the buyer and the seller include who pays for the freight, who is responsible for insurance and who prepares the document. For most of these issues and other questions, the answer is INCOTERMS (international commercial terms). INCOTERMS defines the mutual obligations of the seller and buyer.
l Types of documents involved: contracts, transportation documents such as airway bills and bills of lading, invoices, cash flow documents such as letters of credit and customs clearance documents etc.
l The basic difference in cash flow between domestic and global logistics is the uncertainty associated with payment and receipt of goods. A neutral part such as a bank can act between the buyer and seller in cash transactions. Most global transactions are carried out by a letter of credit (LC). An LC is a financial document issued by the buyer’s bank authorizing the seller to receive payment in accordance with the terms and conditions of the business transaction. After the goods are shipped to the buyer, the seller presents the LC to the bank and receives the payment agreed upon.
