Topic: Henry Luce, the first editor of Time magazine, stated that the 20th Century was the “American Century.” During the 20th Century (1900 – 2000) America’s rise in political, economic, military, social and cultural spheres is undisputed. Choose one of the above areas – political, economical, social, or cultural – and write a five-page essay on how America can be described as being the preeminent power in that sphere in the 20th Century.
You are basically selecting ONE major area of historical importance and using that area to argue how America became a world power in that area. Choose something of personal interest to you. Students in the past have written about the cultural power of America in the 20th Century based on popular music for example. Make sure you back up your thesis with solid evidence. Also, try to focus on a few years – no more than a decade or two - so that you can focus your thesis and your overall essay.

Example: Since 1945, America’s political influence grew as a result of Europe’s economic problems due to World War Two; as a direct outcome of the political policies of Presidents Truman and Kennedy; and the Cold War policy of containment of Communism.
