C．复合关系副词

例A：The old man carries an umbrella whenever he goes out for a walk.

（那个老人无论什么时间出去散步都带一把雨伞。）

例B：He makes friends wherever he goes.

This is why he is so popular.

（他无论到哪儿，朋友就交到哪儿。这就是他人缘好的原因。）

例C：However hard I work, there is more to be done.

（我无论如何努力工作，工作总是做不完。）

例D：However you come, come early.

（不管你怎么来，早到就是了。）

解说 例A的“whenever”等于“at any time then; no matter when（无论在什么时间，无论何时）”的意思。例B的“wherever”等于“at, in, to whatever place（无论在或到任何地方）”的意思。“however”在例C的意思是“in whatever degree（无论到什么程度）”，在例D的意思是“in whatever way（无论是什么方法）”。

“whenever, wherever, however”都不需先行词。

注：①“Whenever”在现代英语常用“every time/each time”来取代。

例：She bites her finger every time she is thinking about something.

（每当她在想事情时，她都会咬手指。）

例：He comes to me for advice each time he is in some trouble.

（每一次他遇到麻烦，他都来向我征求建议。）

②“Where ever”是疑问副词“Where”的强调形，不是关系副词。

Wherever there stands a pole or something like that, dogs are sure to pass water there.

（无论什么地方，只要有竖立的柱子什么的，狗狗就一定会在那里尿尿。——关系副词）

Where ever did you find it?

（你到底从哪儿找到它的？——Where的强调形）

“Where ever…？”只用在问句，同时常常是简短的单句，表示惊讶或疑惑。现代英语也常看到把“Where ever…?”写成“Wherever…？”，应该避免。

Wherever did you get this?

（你到底从哪儿弄到这个的？）
