The convicts were shipped to Australia-a voyage that then took about 8 months-serve a sentence there.Once the sentence was ended,they were free to get jobs if they could.Those who were lucky stayed to purchase land or set up businesses and raise families.Very few could hope to earn enough to pay for a passage home again-even if they wanted to.This use of Australia went on for nearly 50 years,and at the end of that time,nearly 90% of the settlers in Australia were convicts or descendants of convicts.Like the black slaves shipped from Africa to North America,they were not willing immigrants.Very few of them were well off or well educated.Only later,were they joined by settlers who saw the new country as a land of space,sunshine,and opportunity.These came at first from England and from Europe,later, and in large numbers,from various parts of Asia.Australia has become a country in which many languages are used and one in which the study and teaching of language has become immensely important.English remains the official language though,and the language of the edcational system.Australian English has had to find,or borrow,or invent words for many things unknowen in Europe.
