应该是sit 吧。
do 在这里是实意动词，介词BUT后是不太TO的不定式。
I did nothing but sat there 的意思和题意有区别。并且BUT前应有个逗号才对。
nothing but＋do sth．常用于下面两种情况：
1．do nothing but do sth．如：
Last evening I did nothing but repair my farm tools．
昨天晚上我除了修理农具外，没有做其他的事。
2．have nothing to do but do sth．如：
I had nothing to do but sit down and read a newspaper．我无事可做，只有坐下来读读报。
就是跟couldn't do anything 并列，时态都用过去式。
如果把原句改一下你就可以看得更清楚了：
…… I did nothing but sat there ……
我们来分析一下这句话中的THAT从句:I couldn't do anything but sat there.主语是I，谓语是couldn't do,而sat也是谓语，因为but连词。
跟前面的“i couldn't do anything ”对应，所以要用过去式“sat”,而且因为是“do...but...”的结构所以后面的动词前不用加to,所以也不能说“to sit”.
