我们先来看以下几个句子：
1) Beijing is bigger than any city in China.
2) You are taller than any student in your class.
3) I like apples more than any fruit.
4) Tom studies harder than anyone in his class.
我们知道，以上所举例子都是错误的。为什么？这得从比较级的用法和“比较”的概念说起。
比较级，表示两个“人”或“物”的不同比较，用于两者或双方之间。而且进行比较的双方必须是相互分离、互不包含的独立的概念；否则，比较就不合逻辑，不能成立。
以上所列4例，错就错在这点上。下面我们就以所列例句进行分析，指出它们的错误所在，找出改正的方法。
首先，我们看看比较的双方是否为同一范围的“人”或“物”，如果是同一范围的，我们常用“any other +单数可数名词”或“any of the other +复数可数名词”形式。
例1）中，比较的一方是Beijing，另一方是any city in China; 而any city in China也包含Beijing。这么一来，就意味着Beijing在和其它城市相比较的同时，也同自己相比较。因此这个比较是不合逻辑的。纠正这一错误的办法是加一个other，把句子改成：
Beijing is bigger than any other city in China.
用了other，就把Beijing 从any city in China中排除出去了。比较的双方就是Beijing和除Beijing之外的any city in China。这样，比较就合乎逻辑，句子的错误就得到了纠正。
例2）、例3）也可以加上other，使错误得到纠正。如：
You are taller than any other student in your class.
I like apples more than any other fruit.
例4）虽然错误原因一样，但它后面是anyone，不能加other，而需要加上else，如：
Tom studies harder than anyone else in his class.
上句中的else，作“别的，其他”解，作用和other一样，把Tom从anyone in his class中排除出去，使比较合乎逻辑。当然，改正的办法不止一种，只要合乎逻辑，语法正确就行。
当比较的“人”或“物”不属于同一范围时，则不用other。如例1）可改成：
Beijing is bigger than any city in Hebei.
因为any city in Hebei并不包括Beijing 在内。我们也可以举几个其它例子。如：
Ann is nicer than her two sisters.
I like oranges more than apples.
John is taller than all his friends.
有时，比较级和最高级的使用是相对的。例如：
The Changjiang River is longer than any other river in China.
这句话的汉语意思是：长江比中国其它的任何一个河流都长。也就是说：长江是中国最长的河流。那么，用英语也可以说：
The Changjiang River is the longest river in China.
又如，我们要说：吉姆是班上最胖的学生。可用下述句子表达：
1) Jim is fatter than any other student in his class.
2) Jim is fatter than any of the other students in his class.
3) Jim is fatter than any of the others in his class.
4) Jim is fatter than all of the others in his class.
5) Jim is fatter than all the others in his class.
6) Jim is fatter than anyone else in his class.
7) Jim is fatter than his classmates.
8) Jim is the fattest in his class.
9) Jim is the fattest student in his class.
10) Jim is the fattest of the students in his class.
只要同学们善于观察，认真总结，一定会把比较级学好、掌握牢。

如果我没记错的话any是修饰单数的
the other意思是“其他”（为复数），而any other意思也是“其他”，所以用any的情况下，student不用加s，为单数。

the other students强调的是其他的全部，是整体比较，所以用复数。
any other student强调的是其他的任何一个，是逐个比较，所以用单数。

he is taller than the other students一般不常用；
多用he is taller than any other student。
